HOLIDAY MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA AT PINCKNEYVILLE PARK COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER

On Dec. 2, Pinckneyville Park Community Recreation Center is hosting the Holiday Musical Extravaganza in collaboration with Duluth Middle School and other featured guests. The event will showcase local youth talent designed to bring holiday cheer to everyone. This youthful musical ensemble will capture your heart and bring true appreciation for the performing arts through performances including dance, vocal and instrumental selections.

The Honor Band is a community outreach program of the Duluth Middle School Band, led by Ryan Bertram. These students play the most challenging music as well as exploring a variety of popular music styles such as jazz, rock, swing and more. The emcee for the evening will be author and speaker Chris Maxwell. His motivational words and inspirational writings welcome us into a community that guides us to a wholesome togetherness. Another lovely addition to the program is a performance by the graceful and talented, Debbie’s Dancers, which will feature a mix of ballet and swing dances to holiday music. A total of seven delightful featured performances are waiting to showcase their love for the Holidays through their musical performances.

The Holiday Musical Extravaganza will be held on Dec. 2, from 6 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., admission is $8. THE TRADITION CONTINUES WITH THE LIGHTING OF THE TREE in 2011!

Continue the tradition this holiday season with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation (GCPR) and the Lawrenceville Tourism and Trade Association as they host the 24th Annual Lighting of the Tree on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse in downtown Lawrenceville. The beautifully decorated 35-foot Norway Spruce, donated by the Lawrenceville Trade and Tourism Association, will be lit on Thanksgiving night. The evening will be filled with entertainment by Class Act Band, The John King Band and Catherine Kimbro, choreographed dance routines and free face painting and crafts for children, as well as Krazy Holiday Hair at $3 per person. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. and the Jolly Old Elf is rumored to be planning a fashionable entrance this year too, thanks to Hayes Automotive Group. Randy Travis of FOX 5 WAGA-Atlanta returns as emcee this year to host the evening festivities.

The holiday season begins for many Gwinnettians with the annual lighting of the tree ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m., and the much awaited arrival of Santa at approximately 6:45 p.m. GCPR is proud to continue this tradition along with additional sponsors Hayes-Automotive Group, Gwinnett Daily Post, Phoenix Crane and Dixie Homecrafters. This year, there will be an opportunity to donate a toy to the Toys for Tots program, as Marines will be on hand at the Lighting of the Tree to collect new, unwrapped toys for children birth to thirteen years.

Beginning Nov. 26 and running through Dec. 20, the Courthouse will host numerous Christmas activities and events, including Breakfast with Santa for $8 per person including breakfast, crafts and a souvenir photo with Santa. The North Pole mailbox will also be available to drop your letters off to Santa. Each Friday night beginning Dec. 2, An Old Fashioned Christmas will bring families together and children can make a keepsake ornament, decorate Christmas cookies and hear stories told by Santa. “STILL LIFE” ART EXHIBIT at Pinckneyville Park Community Center

A free art exhibit featuring the works of David Gentry will be on display at Pinckneyville Park Community Recreation Center from Nov. 21 through Jan. 12. The “Still Life” exhibit displays an eclectic style derived from the influences of several notable instructors in ceramics, painting, drawing and metal sculpture. David Gentry has always had a passion for photography and pottery, and has reached outside his comfort zone over the past year to explore art and life in new and unique ways. As Gentry explained, this exhibit represents “the convergence of influences which represents a year’s worth of memory snapshots in ceramics, metalwork, painting, drawing and photography. It is a celebration of recalling life lived, seeking passion in our daily living and reminding ourselves that there is still life ahead.” David Gentry uses pottery and art as his outlets for creativity and stress relief, and prefers to share his works with family and friends, while donating the bulk of his work to support church missions’ projects and other community causes.

An Artist Reception will be held Thurs., Dec. 1, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Exhibit hours are Mon. – Thurs. 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., Fri. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Sat. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free. Spooktacular Dance & Play Party at Bogan Park Community Recreation Center, Oct 29, 2011
