McDaniel Farm Park

From Foresite Group

For this historical park project, Foresite Group (with offices in Norcross and the Southeast) worked with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation to design and permit this beautiful site. Located in Duluth, Georgia, McDaniel Farm Park is a 128 acre park, a former cotton farm, that has been restored to depict a typical 1930s subsistence farm in Gwinnett County. This park includes 2.5 miles of connecting, paved multi-purpose trails, a picnic pavilion and a large informal play area and was completed in 2005.

From Trails.com

McDaniel Farm Park is built around a subsistence farm similar to many of the farms in the area. In addition to the asphalt trail, there is a heritage display that is interpreted by docents on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. When people think of antebellum Georgia, they picture the massive cotton plantations of the coast. In the Atlanta area, however, most agriculture before the Civil War was subsistence farming, raising enough corn and wheat to meet only the needs of the family. RHODES JORDAN PARK UNDERGOES RENOVATION AND EXPANSION

Recently commissioners approved a major renovation and expansion project for one of Gwinnett County’s oldest and most centrally-located parks. Visitors to Rhodes Jordan Park will benefit from the addition of a one-mile paved multi-purpose trail and boardwalk around the perimeter of the existing lake, a new restroom building and new parking. In addition, the old picnic pavilions will be replaced and new soccer fields, outdoor basketball courts and horseshoe courts will be added to the park.

Rhodes Jordan Park is a partnership between the City of Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County that dates back to 1991 when the two groups entered into a long-term lease agreement. “This project fulfills Gwinnett County’s long-standing commitment to improve and expand the recreational opportunities at Rhodes Jordan Park,” said District 4 Commissioner Kevin Kenerly.

“Gwinnett County is dedicated to providing a better quality-of-life for our citizens while making every effort to reduce short- and long-term operational costs,” said Commission Chairman Charles Bannister. “This renovation will make Rhodes Jordan Park an even more attractive asset while lowering our long-term maintenance costs.” Bannister cited a few examples, including a new pump system that will use lake water to irrigate ball fields, replacement of older, deteriorating facilities that  require more upkeep, and a stream restoration project to reduce siltation and maintenance expense.

Park safety is another major consideration in the park renovation project and new routing for the park’s main drive will improve vehicular and pedestrian safety.

Gwinnett County awarded the project to the lowest of 13 bidders, CRS Building Corporation, for $7.3 million. Funding comes from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

NEW TRAIL ACCESS, PLAYGROUNDS COMING SOON TO BETHESDA AND RHODES JORDAN PARKS

There will soon be a new Ivy Creek Greenway access trail from Buford Drive/State Route 20 near the Mall of Georgia. The existing 2.7-mile long greenway trail starts at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center and ends near Gravel Springs Road. The 12-foot wide asphalt multi-purpose trail will be 960 feet long, running roughly parallel to the I-85 southbound exit ramp.

JHC Corporation was the lowest of five bidders at $221,600. The construction will include a retaining wall, paving, landscaping and guardrail. A small directional kiosk will be built where the trail intersects the existing sidewalk on Buford Drive.

Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said, “This new spur trail, funded by the 2005 SPLOST program, is part of a planned network of greenway trails throughout the county.” Work is expected to begin soon once the contract is signed.

The Board of Commissioners also approved new playgrounds for Bethesda Park and Rhodes Jordan Park. The playgrounds are located within the baseball complexes at both sites. The funding for these park improvements also comes from 2005 SPLOST revenues. Hasley Recreation and Design, Inc., received the $175,000 contract to remove and replace the two existing playgrounds.
