PAUL TATUM DEDICATED TO SENIOR RECREATION CLUBS FOR 27 YEARS

Posted by admin on March 18, 2010  |  No Comments

Paul Tatum

When Paul Tatum first received his Senior Club membership card for the Evergreen Club in 1983, he was not aware of the impact his involvement would have on the club and everyone associated with the program.

During his twenty-seven years with Senior Recreation Clubs, Tatum played an active role in forming the Recreation Club Council long before a Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation department existed. At that time, the county’s young parks were divided into districts.

Tatum was an active Evergreen Club member for 5 years before the club expanded to form the Drifters Club at Mt. Park Depot building. He served as Vice President then held a 12-year tenure as President of the Drifters Club.

Through the years, Tatum has been a dedicated Senior Recreation Club member, never missing a Holiday or Awards Luncheon.

At ninety-seven years old, Paul Tatum has made many friends through his involvement in the active senior recreation clubs.  He is a model volunteer and is very supportive of Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation’s active senior recreation clubs.

Gwinnett’s Senior Clubs Make a Difference

Posted by admin on October 14, 2009  |  No Comments

It can be scary for a child to be a hospital patient. That’s why members of Gwinnett County Park & Recreation’s Senior Recreation Clubs spent over 1,000 hours to provide handmade comfort.

On Wed, Oct. 7 volunteers packed up a 45-passenger bus and delivered items to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Duluth. “These items were made with love and we hope the kids at the hospital will enjoy these items,” said Coren Wheeler, Program Supervisor at Prime Timers Point Senior Center at George Pierce Park.

Members of eight Senior Recreation Clubs worked months to hand make 23 crocheted afghans, 10 blankets, 606 surgical caps, 50 baseball caps, 95 crocheted cradle purse babies, 228 dolls, 100 headbands and 78 knitted caps. The groups also provided15 wagons for young patients to have a more kid-friendly way to get around the hospital.

The Senior Recreation Clubs meet monthly for social activities, special events and community service projects such as this. Visit www.gwinnettparks.com for more information on Senior Recreation Clubs.

Mountain Park Aquatic Center

Posted by admin on August 19, 2009  |  No Comments

Stone Mountain Aquatic Center

Stone Mountain Aquatic Center

Have you been to the Mountain Park Aquatic Center?  If you live around Lilburn or Mountain Park, I’m sure you have noticed there on Rockbridge Road near Five Forks, just up the road from Kroger.  But have you been there?

It is a great facility.  In addition to the community center which hosts a variety of events, there is the outside recreational pool, an inside instructional pool and the lap pool.

There are different programs available ranging from Parent Assisted Swim Classes to Aqua-Aerobics for Seniors. There are swim team competitions and swim classes for older children and adults.

The gem, though, is the recreational pool.  It has a “zero entry” which means that one can walk into the pool with no steps.  There is a small slide with a water-works theme for the smaller kids to play on.  The water around it is fairly shallow.  There is also a “lazy river” which allows people to float around it and under a waterfall.  Finally, there are two larger waterslides for older kids and adults.

The prices are pretty reasonable.

There are also walking trails around the grounds for alternate exercise.

Pictures from the facility can be seen here.

Summer hours for the outdoor recreational pool ends September 14, 2009. However, the indoor lap pool will be open the fall hours.

Roaring 20’s Fundraiser to Benefit Gwinnett Seniors

Posted by admin on July 25, 2009  |  No Comments

Come and enjoy a night at the speak-easy where you will enjoy jazz and ragtime music, swanky hors d’oeuvres, giggle water refreshments, and auction items for the finicky flappers. All proceeds will benefit the Gwinnett County seniors.

This spectacular event is the seventh annual silent auction hosted by The Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services (Friends). It will be held at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett on Thursday, July 30 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Delmar Gardens is located at 3100 Club Drive in Lawrenceville.

Friends is a private volunteer governed nonprofit organization. The organization’s fundraising efforts have resulted in emergency assistance, home repair, food baskets, dental, medical health and wellness screenings to benefit the senior citizens of Gwinnett. Friends has also met budget shortfalls by supporting 133,825 meals and nutritional dietary supplement drinks for the older population.

The theme for this year’s auction is the “Roaring 20’s” and will feature items and services donated by local businesses and individuals along with big-ticket items such as roundtrip airline tickets, weekend get-a-ways, Braves Baseball tickets and apparel.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Ticket price includes admittance to the event, entertainment, food and beverages, a door prize ticket and participation in the silent and live auction.

For more information or to purchase advance tickets, please contact Celia Moore at 770.822.8775 or celia.moore@gwinnettcounty.com

Taylor Park on the Town Green will soon reflect the sounds of Duluth’s History as the City broke ground on a new playground project.  The ½ acre park located on Main Street in front of City Hall will be the home of a train theme playground which will include a miniature train depot, train set with steam engine, passenger car, tanker car and caboose.  The improvements will also include a train junction with slides, climbing, and crawling equipment. The $261,500 contract was awarded to Ed Castro Landscaping from Roswell. Construction is expected to be completed in August of 2009.  Taylor Park was first opened in 1996 after it was donated to the City by the Kelley Family.
