Stone Mountain Aquatic Center

Stone Mountain Aquatic Center

Have you been to the Mountain Park Aquatic Center?  If you live around Lilburn or Mountain Park, I’m sure you have noticed there on Rockbridge Road near Five Forks, just up the road from Kroger.  But have you been there?

It is a great facility.  In addition to the community center which hosts a variety of events, there is the outside recreational pool, an inside instructional pool and the lap pool.

There are different programs available ranging from Parent Assisted Swim Classes to Aqua-Aerobics for Seniors. There are swim team competitions and swim classes for older children and adults.

The gem, though, is the recreational pool.  It has a “zero entry” which means that one can walk into the pool with no steps.  There is a small slide with a water-works theme for the smaller kids to play on.  The water around it is fairly shallow.  There is also a “lazy river” which allows people to float around it and under a waterfall.  Finally, there are two larger waterslides for older kids and adults.

The prices are pretty reasonable.

There are also walking trails around the grounds for alternate exercise.

Pictures from the facility can be seen here.

Summer hours for the outdoor recreational pool ends September 14, 2009. However, the indoor lap pool will be open the fall hours.

TWO FREE ART EXHIBITS AT SUWANEE’S GEORGE PIERCE PARK

Posted by admin on July 12, 2009  |  No Comments

Art by Bilquis Samadi

Art by Bilquis Samadi

Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation’s George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings and photography featuring artist Builquis Samadi and photographer Frank Sharp.

Bilquis Samadi’s “Bright Color Splash” features bright, vibrant colorful impressionistic paintings. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, she traveled as a child with her parents to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Through these travels, Samadi became enriched through the scenery and at the age of 12 attended her first art class and fell in love with painting. Her family moved to the U.S. and she attended Georgia State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science and Fine Arts. She now puts her images on canvas through oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal in order to share with the rest of the world her experiences. “Every time I use a different media, the result is a surprise,” said Samadi. “Whatever crosses my path in daily life somehow ends finding its way to the canvas.” Her paintings are representational with impressionistic uses of color and texture.

Photography by Frank Sharp

Photography by Frank Sharp

Frank Sharp’s “Mediterranean” is comprised of photographs taken during his travels worldwide with his wife Pearl. Sharp was born in East Tennessee near Knoxville and became interested in photography at an early age, using a twin-lens reflective camera. Later, when he graduated from the University of Tennessee, he bought his first 35mm camera. As the years passed his hobby grew, and on a trip to Michigan Frank did a full-page freelance color photo story that was published on the back page of the Detroit Free Press. Frank went on to work on IBM mainframe computers for several Fortune 500 companies. Now, through his travels, he gets to enjoy more freely the passion he has had since childhood.

Both exhibits are currently on display through Aug. 31. Exhibit hours are Mon. – Thurs.  9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Fri. 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Prior to the celebration, the J.M. Tull – Gwinnett Family YMCA will host a 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk at 9 a.m. (registration begins at 8 a.m.) Get the county park PDF flyer here. A ribbon-cutting ceremony follows at 10 a.m., followed by free kid’s activities, disc golf demonstrations by the Gwinnett Disc Gold Organization and kite flying demonstrations by Suburban Atlanta Kite Enthusiasts. Food concessions will also be available for sale.

The 91-acre park features Gwinnett County’s second 18-hole disc golf course (the first is located at Lenora Park in Snellville), approximately 1.4 miles of paved multi-purpose trails, one mile crushed stone trail, playground, horseshoe pit area, three pavilions, lakeview piers, an outdoor classroom and restrooms.

“The surrounding Lawrenceville and Snellville community really took an active role in the planning of Alexander Park, from the master planning of the park to the celebration we will have Saturday. It is great to see that level of involvement,” said District 4 Commissioner Kevin Kenerly.

Funding for Alexander Park was made possible through the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and totaled $3.8 million in construction costs. The park was designed by McFarland Dyer and Associates, golf course designed by Doug Porter, construction managed by Moreland Altobelli Associates, and the contractor for the project was CMES, Inc.

Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation recently completed construction on new fun amenities at Bay Creek Park, including a 20,000 sq. ft. skate complex, four lighted tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, a third  playground and a pavilion.

According to Nick Scott of AtlantaSkater.com “Gwinnett County doesn’t fence in their parks. Gwinnett is kicking **s, with eight more parks on the books. Bay Creek is the first Pillar Design park in the area. The others are Wally Hollyday and Site design. Settles Bridge is a Wally Hollyday that was  changed a little, for the better, by California Skateparks and it should be open in a couple of months.” Check out their YouTube channel. We’ve also posted some photos from Nick Scott. Check out their site at atlskater.com

The 153-acre park, which opened in 2004, is home to Gwinnett’s first special needs ball field and playground, Unity Place, and also features seven baseball/softball fields, a football field with lighted track and concession building, and a one-mile of paved multi-purpose trails.

Unity Place was funded through a partnership between the Parks & Recreation department, the Grayson Athletic Association and ten Gwinnett-area rotary clubs. The playground features a special rubberized surface with wheelchair-friendly slides and swings.  The handicapped-accessible ball field, complete with wheelchair and walker accessible dugouts, is also constructed with a similar surface. The Special Populations Program offers programs for special needs children and young adults so that they can join in with other children in sports such as baseball, softball, cheerleading and basketball.

Funding for the Bay Creek Park expansion was made possible through the

Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and totaled $3.6 million in design and construction costs. The park expansion was designed by Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc., construction was managed by Moreland Altobelli, Inc. and the contractor for the project was Reliant Construction Co.
This one-of-a-kind park is located at 175 Ozora Rd. in Loganville, just east of Grayson Hwy.. For more information, call 770.822.8840 or visit www.gwinnettparks.com.

Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation’s Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre is back by popular demand with a second new shows on June 12 and 13 at George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center in Suwanee.

The theme for the new show is centered on the night of the 10th annual “Hula Girl of the Year” pageant, where contestants from all over Georgia have assembled for a chance to wear the highly-coveted Pineapple Crown. Judged on runway presentation, talent, interview and overall hula-ness, these lovely ladies (along with one man) will compete to the death to win the coveted title.

The $30 admission price includes a great show plus a seated, family-style Hawaiian dinner featuring salad, pulled pork, rolls, sweet potatoes, assorted fruits, pineapple upside-down cake and raspberry tea. Non-pork options available upon request. Guests can also enjoy the non-alcoholic Tiki bar and each guest receives a complimentary lei.

Audience participation helps to bring this mystery in to play, with select roles being designated specifically for audience members. Shows begin at 7 p.m. and are suitable for ages 12 and up.
