Roaring 20’s Fundraiser to Benefit Gwinnett Seniors

Come and enjoy a night at the speak-easy where you will enjoy jazz and ragtime music, swanky hors d’oeuvres, giggle water refreshments, and auction items for the finicky flappers. All proceeds will benefit the Gwinnett County seniors.

This spectacular event is the seventh annual silent auction hosted by The Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services (Friends). It will be held at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett on Thursday, July 30 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Delmar Gardens is located at 3100 Club Drive in Lawrenceville.

Friends is a private volunteer governed nonprofit organization. The organization’s fundraising efforts have resulted in emergency assistance, home repair, food baskets, dental, medical health and wellness screenings to benefit the senior citizens of Gwinnett. Friends has also met budget shortfalls by supporting 133,825 meals and nutritional dietary supplement drinks for the older population.

The theme for this year’s auction is the “Roaring 20’s” and will feature items and services donated by local businesses and individuals along with big-ticket items such as roundtrip airline tickets, weekend get-a-ways, Braves Baseball tickets and apparel.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Ticket price includes admittance to the event, entertainment, food and beverages, a door prize ticket and participation in the silent and live auction.

COMMUNITY GARDEN PART OF SUWANEE’S PLANS FOR ADDITIONAL OPEN SPACE ENHANCEMENTS

The City of Suwanee is planning additional improvements and programming through its award-winning open space initiative. The City will undertake enhancements at PlayTown Suwanee later this year, including the addition of a trail on an adjoining, recently purchased property. The City also has begun planning for a community garden at the Williams Farm property on Buford Highway.

“Our goal is to have the garden ready for the community to plant in the spring of 2010,” says Jessica Roth, assistant to the city manager. “Establishing a community garden in our historic Old Town area is a nice way to pay homage to the property and to our history. Suwanee was for many years a small, agricultural community.”

The nearly 7-acre Williams Farm property, purchased in 2003, is among more than 300 acres of open space the City of Suwanee has acquired through its open space program since 2002.

The City issued a request for qualifications last week for landscape architect services to design and prepare the infrastructure for the garden, which also will serve as a passive park. Work will include constructing garden plots of various sizes, rehabilitating the existing barn, and adding pathways and other park elements.

The City has allocated $225,000 in remaining open space funds for design and construction of the garden.

In March, Suwanee used $102,000 in open space funds to purchase a 5.5-acre property located on Stonecypher Road near the intersection with Eva Kennedy.

A trail will be built on this property as part of upcoming enhancements at PlayTown Suwanee, the community-built playground on Main Street. In addition, a picnic pavilion will be constructed at the playground. The additions are expected to be completed next spring. The anticipated cost of about $315,000 will be covered through open space and 2005 SPLOST funds.

Suwanee has received several awards for its open space program through which the community has built four new parks and added three miles to its Suwanee Creek Greenway. Citizens approved $17.7 million in open space bond funds in November 2001.

Alcovy Greenspace Connects Two Parks

By buying almost 54 acres of undeveloped land along the Alcovy River, Gwinnett commissioners today added significantly to a future greenway connection between two large parks as envisioned in their long-range master plan.

The $1.1 million purchase includes 1,670 feet of river frontage that adjoins another 14 acres of County property to protect more than a mile of the riverbed. The newly purchased property is located west of Lawrenceville between the 715-acre Tribble Mill Park and the 290-acre Palm Creek park site.

District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau said, “The County’s Open Space Master Plan identified the Alcovy River corridor as a preservation priority so we’re excited to be able to take this big step toward completing it.”

Chairman Charles Bannister again credited voters for approving the 2005 SPLOST program that raised money to preserve undeveloped land. “This is another move forward in protecting waterways and providing greenspace for our nationally recognized park system,” said Bannister.

Georgia Cycling Gran Prix Debuts in Gwinnett

Georgia Cycling Gran Prix, in less than 30 days, will make its racing debut in Gwinnett County, Georgia at the TopView Cycling Classic, and a week later, in Albany, Georgia and the Regions Bank Race Weekend.

The TopView Cycling classic will feature two challenging road courses on February 28 – March 1, 2009.  Day one takes place in Barrow County, featuring a rolling 7.1 mile loop in Winder, Georgia.  This course will be a great start to the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix and your 2009 season.

Day two is a familiar course to those who participated in the 2008 Cycling for Parkinsons Weekend.  This seven-mile loops course will make for a spectacular race as part of the first Georgia Cycling Gran Prix Event.  Winding through the back roads of Dacula, Georgia, this course features challenging, hilly terrain.

The Regions Bank Weekend is a two-day, three-stage race, beginning with a time trial and criterium in downtown Albany on Saturday, March 7, and a road race on March 8.  The time trial begins on the riverside street of downtown Albany.  With over ten turns in 3.1 K, the time trial will have riders ducking and diving and stomping on their pedals as they weave through the streets of downtown.

Competitors will revisit the TT course for the criterium – a figure-eight, 2 K course through Albany is an ideal course to test legs in the season’s first criterium.  Get your legs ready for the road race, as the 54.5 K loop will take racers through the Albany country.

This year’s Region’s Bank Race Weekend features an increased prize purse of $7500 and decreased entry fees from 2008, so go online and register at TrueSport.com!
