FEDERAL FUNDS HELP TO BUILD GREENWAY

On Tuesday, Gwinnett commissioners accepted a million dollars in federal transportation enhancement funds to help design and build Section 3 of the Ivy Creek Greenway. Construction will start next summer at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center in Buford.

The new portion of the greenway will wind through the woods for almost a mile before connecting to the existing trail that runs behind the Mall of Georgia, making a continuous length of over three miles. The work includes paved trail, a suspension bridge across the 100-year floodway, an information kiosk and a restroom facility. Total design and construction costs are $1.8 million, including $800,000 from the 2005 SPLOST sales tax program.

Future sections will connect to existing greenway trails within George Pierce Park, resulting in seven miles of greenway trail from Suwanee to Buford.

YOUTH ASSOCIATION TO FUND RABBIT HILL PARK PRESS BOX

Mountain Park Athletic Association_Baseball

On Tuesday, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners accepted an agreement with the Mountain View Athletic Association, Inc., to build a football press box at Rabbit Hill Park that will be funded by the volunteer group. The nonprofit provides youth sports programs at the park including baseball, softball, football and cheerleading.

When commissioners approved a construction contract to expand Rabbit Hill Park in August, the original bid award did not include the press box. The Mountain View Athletic Association approached the County about adding the facility and agreed to reimburse the County for the $108,000 cost.

Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said, “This is another good example of community volunteers raising private funds to help provide quality recreational facilities for youth sports programs.”

VINES PARK RENOVATION GETS UNDERWAY

VinesGarden

Gwinnett commissioners recently approved a major renovation project for Vines Park near Grayson in southern Gwinnett. The project will replace the existing pavilion with a new one located closer to the lake, replace the existing trail around the lake and add a new lake overlook.

In addition, crews will remove the old wooden structures and bridges that existed on the original residential property when the land was donated to the County in 1990. These structures have presented maintenance issues over the years.

Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said, “We are using new materials that are expected to reduce future maintenance costs for the trails and structures while keeping the lakeside experience visitors expect to find at Vines Park. We also will improve access from the parking lot to the trail.”

The County signed a 20-year lease agreement in 1997 allowing Georgia Fine Restaurants, Inc., to operate Vines Mansion on the park property but Hoskins said the rehab project does not include the leased property.

The Board awarded the $1.07 million project to low bidder Rescom of Georgia, LLC, using funds from the 2005 SPLOST sales tax program. Vines Park opened to the public in 2005.
