NEW SIDEWALKS WILL CONNECT PARKS IN GWINNETT

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday awarded a construction contract for pedestrian safety improvements along Lawrenceville Highway/U.S. 29 in Lilburn.

Crews will add just under a mile of five-foot-wide sidewalk along the north side of the highway as well as install curb and gutter and make other improvements to the roadside shoulders. The new sidewalk will fill in gaps between existing sections, creating a continuous sidewalk from Rockbridge Road to Hillcrest Road/Main Street and linking two County parks – the new Bryson Park and Lions Club Park, which is currently closed for renovations.

The project also includes five new transit shelter pads to enhance access to the existing Gwinnett County Transit Local 30 Route. In addition, the traffic signal Holly Ridge Drive/Pine Road will be upgraded for full pedestrian access including crosswalks and pedestrian signals. The city of Lilburn is funding a portion of the signal work.

District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard said, “I’m pleased to partner with Lilburn officials to increase walkability and safety for our residents. Projects like this one are important for connecting neighborhoods and increasing pedestrian access to recreation, shopping and transit opportunities.”

The contract was awarded to ISC, Inc., the lowest of three bidders at $332,454.25. An American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant is covering the cost of construction, with the exception of the signal upgrades. SPLOST paid for the design and right-of-way acquisition.

Construction is anticipated to be complete in late 2013.

GRANT HELPS FUND LILBURN TRAIL CONNECTION

Camp Creek Greenway

With help from a $100,000 Recreation Trails Grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Gwinnett commissioners on Tuesday approved a new greenways trail connection in Lilburn.

The project will create a bike and pedestrian link from the Camp Creek Greenway to Lions Club Park, which is currently undergoing renovations. The new 0.8-mile trail will connect to the 2-mile Camp Creek Greenway trail built by the City of Lilburn. The construction includes a new 700-foot boardwalk, asphalt trail and a 60-foot long concrete bridge underpass at Rockbridge Road along Camp Creek.

District Two Commissioner Lynette Howard said, “I am excited to see greenway projects link communities and parks. Connections like this one contribute to good health and make Gwinnett County an even better place to live, work and play.”

Future plans include extending the trail south to Harmony Grove Park through the Camp Creek Greenspace at Lions Club Park.

Astra Group Inc. was the low bidder at $260,000. Construction is expected to take about 90 days. SPLOST program funds will cover the remaining cost to enhance the Gwinnett Greenways program.

BOGAN AQUATIC CENTER UNDERGOES RENOVATION

Bogan Park Aquatic

Commissioners today approved a major renovation of the 15-year-old Bogan Park Aquatic Center. The project includes new roof panels, new HVAC and filtration systems and locker room renovations to improve operational and energy efficiencies.

The aquatic center provides year-round recreational swim opportunities for all ages and includes two indoor swimming pools – a competition pool used for swimming lessons, lap swimming and swim/dive teams and a family leisure pool consisting of a water playground, lazy river and water slide.

Funding for the renovation project comes from the 2005 SPLOST program. The $3.15 million contract was awarded to low bidder Bryson Construction Inc.

The aquatic center will close in February and reopen in September. Gwinnett’s other indoor aquatic centers at Bethesda Park, Collins Hill Park, Mountain Park and West Gwinnett Park will be open as usual. Pool pass holders can use their passes at any Gwinnett County aquatic facility.
