Come celebrate Older Americans Month with a variety of events throughout the month of May. Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation in partnership with Health & Human Services, is featuring the Senior Art Showcase.  Starting on May 2 and continuing throughout the month, local senior artists will showcase their exclusive works of art in the atrium of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.  The exhibit includes artwork from patrons at the Senior Recreation Club, Health & Human Services Senior Service Center and Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation Community Centers.  In addition, photography works by Frank Sharp will be exhibited at the Pinckneyville Park Community Recreation Center beginning May 9 and artwork by Lesa Sakawa at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse from May 4 until July 31.

A resolution for Older Americans Month will be presented by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on May 3. Immediately following will be an Artist’s Reception which will include light refreshments and a chance to meet the featured senior artists.

Other events in the month include Steller Senior Celebration Luncheon on May 6. In collaboration with the Gwinnett Senior Recreation Council, outstanding Senior Recreation Club members will be recognized for their service and commitment.  There will be entertainment, activities, door prizes and a delectable assortment of food.

At Bethesda Park Senior Recreation Center on May 11, seniors can enjoy refreshments, camaraderie and a movie during the Silver Screen Cinema event.  Also, at the same location on May 20, will be the healthy living expo Age Strong! Live Long!. Older Americans can put on their walking shoes for a stroll in the park followed by socializing and sampling heart-healthy snack and desserts.

The month will culminate May 24, at Prime Timers Pointe at George Pierce Park with SeniorFest featuring exciting dance exhibitions, entertaining games and much more. Throughout the month of May, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation will be collecting recipes for Seasoned with Thyme, a cookbook which will be created, and available for purchase at online and at all Community Recreation Centers. Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation is proud to support Older Americans Month and the opportunity to show appreciation and commitment for our senior citizens.
