NEW SIDEWALKS WILL CONNECT PARKS IN GWINNETT

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday awarded a construction contract for pedestrian safety improvements along Lawrenceville Highway/U.S. 29 in Lilburn.

Crews will add just under a mile of five-foot-wide sidewalk along the north side of the highway as well as install curb and gutter and make other improvements to the roadside shoulders. The new sidewalk will fill in gaps between existing sections, creating a continuous sidewalk from Rockbridge Road to Hillcrest Road/Main Street and linking two County parks – the new Bryson Park and Lions Club Park, which is currently closed for renovations.

The project also includes five new transit shelter pads to enhance access to the existing Gwinnett County Transit Local 30 Route. In addition, the traffic signal Holly Ridge Drive/Pine Road will be upgraded for full pedestrian access including crosswalks and pedestrian signals. The city of Lilburn is funding a portion of the signal work.

District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard said, “I’m pleased to partner with Lilburn officials to increase walkability and safety for our residents. Projects like this one are important for connecting neighborhoods and increasing pedestrian access to recreation, shopping and transit opportunities.”

The contract was awarded to ISC, Inc., the lowest of three bidders at $332,454.25. An American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant is covering the cost of construction, with the exception of the signal upgrades. SPLOST paid for the design and right-of-way acquisition.

Construction is anticipated to be complete in late 2013.

GCPR LIFEGUARDS WIN FIRST PLACE AT STATE COMPETITION

2012 Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Team

2012 Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Team

Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation (GCPR) took first place at the annual Georgia Recreation and Park Association State Lifeguarding Competition on July 23 in Clayton County.

Lifeguards passed through several rounds of try-outs to be chosen for inclusion on GCPR state-bound team. Six lifeguards from various GCPR aquatic centers earned spots on the team after proving their lifeguard skills and abilities during the tryouts. Katherine Vaux, Valerie Ward, Robert Johnson, Guido Saccaggi, Stephen Brinkley and Dan Knox studied lifeguard materials, swam and conditioned throughout the summer to prepare for the competition.

The competition consisted of several events evaluating teamwork, athletic ability and lifeguarding knowledge. The GCPR lifeguards dominated the swim relay event with the fastest time, and secured another first during a critical incident event applying their lifeguard skills during a realistic emergency simulation. Overall, the GCPR team placed in the top 3 for all of the events, which led to an amazing win.

The team was supervised and coached by Aquatics Coordinator, Christine Greenfield and Aquatics Supervisor, Amanda Groth. “We are very proud of the lifeguard team for their victory at state,” said Christine Greenfield. “This win is a testimony of our exceptional lifeguard and aquatics programs”, said Amanda Groth.
