GMC to host injury prevention clinic at Gwinnett Stadium in January Professionals from Gwinnett Medical Center and the Atlanta Braves will educate parents and coaches

Posted by admin on January 6, 2010  |  No Comments

Gwinnett Stadium

Gwinnett Medical Center will host an injury prevention clinic at Gwinnett Stadium on Saturday, January 16, 2010. The event will educate parents and coaches on how best to protect their young athletes from baseball-related injuries.

The clinic, Injury Prevention in Youth Baseball, will last from 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and will begin with physicians and other experts on the topic from both GMC and the Atlanta Braves.

“Our goal is to educate the parents, coaches and players to try to prevent injuries before they happen,” said Scott Maughon, MD, chairman of Gwinnett Medical Center’s Sports Medicine program.

All speakers will take part in a round table discussion just before lunch. Following lunch, a breakout session will focus on pitch counts, pitch types and pitching mechanics. The event will be concluded with an all-access tour of the Gwinnett Braves’ facilities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

“Far too many unnecessary sports-related injuries occur right here in our community,” said Gwinnett SportsRehab therapist Lloyd Van Pamelen, PT, CSCS. “We’re hoping that by equipping the parents and coaches of our youth with a few valuable lessons, we can make a huge impact.”

The cost of the clinic is $15 per participant, and registration, which closes January 13, can be done by calling 678-442-5000. The first 50 to register will receive a pair of tickets to a 2010 Gwinnett Braves game.

For more information, contact Tim Simmons at tsimmons@gwinnettmedicalcenter.org or 678-312-6018.

JONES BRIDGE SOCCER: NEW NAME, NEW LOOK, NEW FORMAT

Posted by admin on December 19, 2009  |  No Comments

Jones Bridge Soccer

Jones Bridge Soccer (JBS) is the new name for Peachtree Booster Club’s soccer program.  The soccer league is located at Jones Bridge Park on East Jones Bridge Road, in Peachtree Corners near the Forum shopping center.  It was affiliated in 2008 with Georgia State Soccer Association (GSSA).  JBS teams may participate in GSSA tournaments:  the fall cup and spring State Championship, and other tournaments.  JBS’s U14 Girls Breakers won the state’s fall championship, the Kohl’s Cup, in November.

Registration for spring soccer starts in January.  Look for registration flyers in your children’s school bags.  Players aged 2-4 are may register for the Preschool “Superstars” Program, and players aged 5-12 may register for the Recreational Program.

Since it’s affiliation with GSSA, JBS uses the Kicking Is Not Soccer (KINS) program created by GSSA.  These are small-sided games where players get maximum touches on the ball, thus enhancing their soccer skills.  Parents love seeing their children get a lot of time with the ball, and kids love the small fields because they get to score more and feel successful.

JBS is a rec league only.  For the modern student who has multiple activities JBS’s schedule of one practice and one game per week is a perfect complement for the busy student.  JBS would also like to recruit enough girls for the spring season to have a separate girls and boys leagues.

At JBS, skills, fun, and sportsmanship are emphasized.  It is fun competition without politics and pressure.  Many parents agree that for the money, convenience, and pressure-free environment of playing in Peachtree Corners, that JBS is a great value, and who couldn’t use that?

Jones Bridge Soccer’s U14 Breakers Win 2009 Kohl’s Cup

Posted by admin on November 18, 2009  |  No Comments

Jones Bridge

Jones Bridge

Jones Bridge Soccer’s (JBS) U14 Breakers won their second Kohl’s American Cup November 15.  On Saturday they tied the first game with Jefferson Football Club 2-2.  The second game versus the Columbus Girls Inc. was a sound victory 9-0.  The Breakers cinched their place for the final game with a victory against the Fayette County Wildcats 6-0 in game three.  The final game versus the Henry County Sidekicks was a physical game resulting in two injured Breakers.

The first score of the final game came relatively early for the Breakers and then a hard fought battle ensued.  In the last 10 seconds of the game the Sidekicks were awarded a penalty kick which tied the game.  The game went into 10 minutes overtime where the Breakers held the line.  The game was decided in a 5 PK (penalty kick) shootout which gave the Breakers the victory 2-1!

The Breakers play with JBS out of Jones Bridge Park on East Jones Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners.  The club is formerly known as Peachtree Booster Club Soccer.  Congratulations to the mighty Breakers!

Youth Track and Field in Gwinnett

Posted by admin on November 9, 2009  |  No Comments

Someone just recently posted a question about youth Track and Field in Gwinnett.  It seems most times the schools are the best place to start. My son just started Cross Country for the first time at Norcross High School. He had a good time, ran at least 4 miles a day (sometimes 7-8) and competed on the weekends at different 5K events. He enjoined it and built up some great friendships – he intends to continue in the spring in track and fields and then run through the summer program with the other boys. By the fall he’ll be ready for Cross Country again.

In the mean time to answer the youth running question. Outside of the high schools and some middles school you can try:

Lightning Spikes

Registration for the 2010 Season Begins November 21, 2009. Registration will be held at Berkmar High School between 12pm-2pm. Download and complete registration forms off their site.

Games and practices are held at Elementary and Middle School Gyms in the Collins Hill Cluster, and also at Richards Middle School.  Activities during the week begin after 6 PM, and on Saturdays after 9 AM.  There will typically be two or three activities each week, being a combination of practices and games.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Due to a policy change between Gwinnett County Public Schools and Parks & Recreation, the costs for gym usage have increased substantially.  As a result, CHAA has incurred a $25 increase in registration costs from last year.  Theyhave worked closely with our GCPS representative to minimize the cost increase, but must increase our registration fees to cover the increased cost of gym usage.

The Winter season will cost $155 and will run from November 14th through February 2010.  The season will consist of 11 games, including a single-elimination tournament to complete the season (5-6 age group will play 8 games & no tournament).  Teams will practice 1-2 times per week, and will play 1 or 2 games per week after games begin.

The girl’s leagues will play some inter-association games with other local organizations such as Duluth, Peachtree Ridge, and Dacula.

CHAA will be looking for coaching volunteers in all age groups! If you are a parent interested in being a coach, please click visit their website.

If your player will need a uniform, please be sure to select the sizes on the registration form.  The cost (Shirt: $25 / Shorts: $15) will be added to your registration.  CHAA will have samples available during player evaluations and a list for you to verify your players’ sizes.

The second annual Ride for Rally benefiting the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research will be held at Addictive Cycling/Cafeine Café at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

In honor of childhood cancer survivor Russell Tindol, the 50 mile ride was started last year by the Frazier Cycling members to show their cycling teammate Russell their support and help raise awareness for childhood cancer.  Russell has been in remission for one year and is back on his bike!

This year’s ride will offer a 10, 30 or 50 mile option and will be a social ride for all ages and levels.  You can register on line until Friday, October 16 or day of registration will begin at 7:00 a.m.  There will be a social BBQ after the ride that includes hot dogs & hamburgers for all riders.  There will also be live music provided by ACT 13 that will begin at 10:45 a.m.

Sponsored by Frazier Cycling, Addictive Cycling and Allgood Pest Solutions, entry fees for the ride are $30 on line or $35 day of the ride.

We hope you can come join Russell and his family and friends for a bike ride through Buford, Suwanee and Flowery Branch.  For more information about the ride, to register for the event or to make a general donation to the Ride for Rally fund please visit www.active.com/donate/rideforrally
