IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon Less Than One Month Away

Posted by admin on August 24, 2010  |  No Comments

I know it’s not Gwinnett. But, there are alot of kids into this…

On Sunday, September 12, IronKids will hold the second annual IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon, drawing youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age. The event, taking place at Wills Park, will include five divisions: Ages 6-8, Ages 9-11, Ages 12-15, Military and Teams. The Military division will allow children of United States armed forces members to compete against each other within the three age groups.  The Teams Division allows a sports team, club or school that has youth triathletes to compete as a team in the event. A trophy will be awarded to the coach of the top finishing team.

Participants ages 12-15 will begin at 7 a.m. with a swim in an outdoor pool. Athletes will then bike on closed roads and run on paved walkways and grass throughout the park. Ages 9-11 and ages 6-8 will follow on the same course.

Distances for IronKids Alpharetta vary, depending on the age of the participants:

- Ages 6 to 8: 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike and 500-yard run

- Ages 9 to 11: 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike and 1-mile run

- Ages 12 to 15: 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run

Next month’s event will see youth representing nearly 10 states, including more than 400 children from Georgia. One who will be competing in Alpharetta is Winter Vinecki, 11, of Salem, Ore., who founded “Team Winter” as a way to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer, the disease that claimed her father’s life in 2009. Last year, her efforts garnered donations of more than $150,000 which went directly to prostate cancer research. Vinecki, who aims to encourage children to be active, serves as an IronKids ambassador and hopes to inspire other participants to support and race for a cause close to their heart.

The Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with IronKids, is giving away 20 free entries to this year’s race along with IronKids T-shirts and hats. Register to win at www.awesomealpharetta.com or stop by the Downtown Alpharetta Welcome Center located at 178 South Main Street.  Lucky winners will be drawn on September 1, 2010. Those who have already registered and paid the entry fee may still enter to win. If their name is drawn, the registration fee will be refunded by IronKids.

All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. The top five finishers in each age group will qualify for the IronKids National Championship, taking place on Oct. 3 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

In addition to the race, the series offers an interactive weekend experience for the entire family. The IronKids Expo, registration and packet pick-up will take place at Wills Park on Saturday, September 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a course talk at 1 p.m. followed by a triathlon clinic, led by a USAT-certified coach, at 2 p.m. Registration and packet pick-up will re-open on race morning from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

“The IronKids mission is to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle,” said Michelle Payette, director of IronKids. “We are excited to return to Awesome Alpharetta, which had the largest field in the 2009 IronKids National Triathlon Series with nearly 900 participants! We anticipate an increase of approximately 300 kids, making the Alpharetta race one of our largest in the U.S.”

Visitors from out of town can make a weekend of it at one of Alpharetta’s 23 upscale and modern hotels and explore all that Alpharetta has to offer in the way of family-friendly fun and entertainment. “We are excited to host the IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon again this year,” says Janet Rodgers, President and CEO of the Alpharetta CVB. “This event has a positive economic impact on our city bringing young athletes and their families to stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and shop in our stores.  We look forward to working with the IronKids team this year and for many years to come.”

Duncan Creek Park Gets Artificial Multi-Purpose Field

Duncan Creek Park artificial turf

Mill Creek Athletic Association and other community members officially opened the 144,000 square foot multi-purpose artificial turf field at Duncan Creek Park on Saturday, August 14 during their 2010 Football Jamboree. The field was dedicated to District 4 Commissioner, Kevin Kenerly, by Mill Creek Athletic Association, for his true dedication, service and volunteerism to the community and his commitment and mentorship to Gwinnett County’s Youth and the Mill Creek Athletic Association from 1995 – 2010.

This field is the very first artificial turf field installed in a Gwinnett County Park. It is striped for football, soccer and lacrosse, and composed of two inch tall polyethylene fibers filled with 468,000 pounds of rubber (recycled tires). The extensive drainage system of this field is designed to absorb a rainfall intensity of nearly 30 inches an hour. The surface can be cooled in warm weather with a twelve zone irrigation system. The project was completed under budget in 100 days which was earlier than anticipated. Construction of this project was funded by the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (or SPLOST). 2010 DIXIE YOUTH AAA MINOR (10U) GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT

Posted by admin on July 25, 2010  |  No Comments

10U - NGBSA

Wednesday (Day 5): North Gwinnett faced off with undefeated Troup County.  The Bulldogs jumped out early with a 2-out rally.  Dan Tamburo went long scoring 3 runs.  The Bulldogs struggled to find it’s pitching, walking 5 Troup batters in the first inning and giving up 3 runs to tie the game.  The next three innings, the Bulldogs only put up 4 hits, and only scoring one run, while Troup was able to rack up 9 runs on 9 hits.  The final score after 6 innings was Troup 12, Bulldogs 6.  They had a very good run making it to the Final Four in a Dixie Youth state tournament dominated by teams made up with travel players.  We wish Troup County all the luck in the championship series which begins on Friday against either Lee County or Perry.

Tuesday (Day 4): The Bulldogs faced North Macon for the second time Tuesday.  The game was dominated again by defense.  Rohit pitched the whole game and was fantastic!  77 pitches, 54 of them strikes!  He gave up only one run on four hits in the 6 innings, and only 2 walks.  The solid defense really helped.  Bulldogs eliminated North Macon, winning 3-1.  North Gwinnett is in the FINAL FOUR!

Monday (Day 3): The Bulldogs faced off against Albany.  In the first inning, the Bulldogs walked the first three Albany batters.  JoJo came in to relief pitch and after some great defense, only gave up one run that inning.  The Bulldogs were also only able to put one on the board.  In the second inning, the Bulldogs defense gave up another run, but our offense was able to add two.  Bulldogs ahead 3-2 going into the 3rd inning.  The 3rd inning was scoreless for both sides.  In the 4th, the Bulldogs were able to add another to the board, while the defense held off Albany another inning.  In the fifth, Albany was held to only one run, but was able to shut down the Bulldogs.  Going into the sixth inning, Bulldogs up 4-3, Albany walked 4 of our batters, followed by some sacrifice flies to the outfield.  They added 3 more runs.  Albany came back to within striking distance, putting two runs on the board.  The Bulldogs brought in Rohit to relieve JoJo, striking out the next batter, and causing the final batter to ground to first base.  Game over: 7-5.  JoJo pitched in 6 innings, but only faced 27 batters.  Of the 74 pitches he threw, 61 were strikes!  Outstanding!  Defense won this game.  They are now in the final 8!  Bulldogs face North Macon again Tuesday night at 6:00 on Field 5.

Sunday (Day 2): After a scoreless first inning, North Macon scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning.  The Bulldogs pounded the ball in the bottom half, racking up 12 runs.  However, the Bulldogs could not hold on to the lead, giving up between 4 and 5 runs each inning after that, while only scoring 2 more runs the rest of the game.  They lost 21-14.  They go on to face Albany Monday night at 8:00pm on Field 7.

Saturday (Day 1): The NG Bulldogs (National) had a strong showing against Wrens.  They won their first game 13-4.  Nick Harrison sent one over the fence for his first-ever home run.  The next game will be at 4:00 Sunday on Field 5 versing North Macon American.

The Bicycle Wheel to host Grand Opening of Expanded Location Local store begins its seventh year of operations in Johns Creek

Posted by admin on July 19, 2010  |  No Comments

The Bicycle Wheel, a locally-owned bike store in the Johns Creek community for the past six years, is expanding and moving to a new location.  The new store will be in the Medlock Bridge Shopping center off of Medlock Bridge Road.  The new address is 6000 Medlock Bridge Parkway, Suite E-1000, Johns Creek, GA 30022.  The company’s phone number, business hours and website will remain the same.

The store will feature a new “industrial” look inside with a larger parking lot to accommodate more customers on Saturdays and holidays.  There will also be a flat test ride area behind the store where customers can try out bikes before they make a purchase.  “In addition to having outgrown our current location, our existing parking lot is cramped and has become a cut-through for the adjacent shopping center.  This new store will allow for safer test rides and more parking.  We couldn’t be more excited about the move,” stated Scott Jones, owner of The Bicycle Wheel.

To celebrate the move, the store is hosting a Grand Opening/Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 7th, from 9:00am until 7:00pm.  The event will feature a free breakfast after the Saturday morning ride along with a full day of events including vendor exhibits from Shimano, Saris, Pacific and Cannondale, children’s activities, complimentary lunch, rider demonstrations and much more.  ns and much more. For more information about The Bicycle Wheel, visit www.thebicyclewheel.net.

Local cyclists win podium honors in USA Cycling 2010 Junior Road National Championships

Posted by admin on July 18, 2010  |  No Comments

Frazier Cycling’s Juniors National Race Team competed in the USA Cycling 2010 Junior Road National Championships held in Bend, Oregon June 22nd through June 27th.  The 15 member National Team had their most successful showing in five years of national competition, acquiring seven medals, including two National Championships and many additional top 20 finishes.

National medal winners Dominique Shore, James Todd, Philip O’Donnell and Zoe Frazier

James Todd, 12, a resident of Norcross, won his first medal, fifth place, in the Men’s 10-12 criterium.  His medal followed a disappointing opening day in the road race, typically his best event.  After only two kilometers of the 20-km road race, there was a pile up at the front.  James was able to avoid the crash but his derailleur was damaged when struck by another racer. He continued for one lap around the main circuit, trailing the field before his coach advised him to withdraw.  It was a real setback for the team and James, as this was the first race of the 2010 Championships.  James kept a positive attitude and was able to work with his parents and a local bike shop to get his bike repaired quickly in order to compete in the next day’s criterium.   James had a phenomenal criterium race.  He stayed with the fast paced leaders throughout the race and achieved the hard fought fifth place medal by holding off one of the top favorites by one tenth of a second.   The Men’s 10-12 criterium was also Frazier Cycling’s best showing at this year’s nationals with all four age group competitors placing in the top 16: Teja Gummadi of Suwanee was 9th, Adi Gummadi was 11th , and Rishi Mocherla of Alpharetta was 16th.

Philip O’Donnell, 14, a Suwanee resident, was able to bring home two “Stars and Stripes Jerseys” with dominating national championship wins in the Men’s 13/14 40-km road race and Men’s 13/14 criterium.  Philip also placed second in the Men’s 13/14 time trial.  In the Men’s road race, Philip made the winning break with two other racers about half way through the seven lap race.  The three racers built their lead to about 90 seconds before the final stretch.  Philip dropped his foes in the final sprint for his first national championship this year.

The Men’s 13/14 criterium proved to be the most exciting race of this year’s nationals.  Philip shot to the first turn quickly opening a gap on the field.  Only Daniel Parks, GS Tenzing, was able to join him.  The field did not see Philip and Daniel again until late in the race when the two lapped them.  Only four chasers were not lapped; however, Philip and Daniel pulled the field to within eight seconds of the chasers.  In the final turn, there was a crash which Philip skillfully avoided.  Daniel Parks was not so fortunate – he fell and damaged his bike.  Not realizing that Daniel had crashed, Philip accelerated toward the finish line and once again dropped the field to win his second consecutive race and national title.  Note: Daniel was able to run the final 250 meters with his broken bike to cross the finish line and salvage the silver medal just ten seconds ahead of the sprinting chase group.

Dominique Shore, 14, a Suwanee resident,  placed fifth in both the Women’s 13/14 road race and criterium.   Additionally, Dominique was ninth in the Women’s 13/14 time trial.  She was the team’s most aggressive female rider.  In the road race and the criterium, Dominique lead the chasers in what proved to be futile attempts to bring back the solo champion.  Deservedly, Dominique earned national medals for her efforts.

Zoe Frazier, 15, a resident of Suwanee, experienced disappointments in the road race finishing 8th after being forced wide into the gravel on the final turn. In the Women’s 15/16 criterium, Zoe wasn’t feeling well and fell off the pace early in the race.  After a few laps, her coaches made the decision to pull her out.  It was the only second time she had to abandon race in her career. Zoe was able to come off of these setbacks with a bronze medal in her final event, the 24km Time Trial.  She was the top 15-year-old finisher and missed winning her third national title by a scant 13 seconds. Zoe remains the team’s all-time national medal winner with a total of 10 dating back to 2006.

Other noteworthy Frazier Cycling National Team finishers include the following:

Abigail Aldridge, 13, placed 6th in the Women’s 13/14 criterium, 7th in the time trial, and 9th in the road race.

Ally Beach, 16, competed in her first national championship event.  Her top performance was the Women’s 15/16 time trial where she placed a very impressive 7th.  She was 11th in the road race and 13th in the criterium.

Stephanie Cucaz, 17 competed in her first national championship event.  She finished a very impressive tenth in the Women’s 17/18 criterium.  She also placed 14th in the time trial and 15th in the road race.

Additional Frazier Cycling National Team members included David Goodman (Suwanee), Andrew Hodges (Suwanee), Andrew Macrae (Decatur), Russell Tindol (Buford) and Sam Tomaka (Atlanta).

The Spring 2010 Breakers are: Brooke Adams, Laura Braden, Katelyn Carpenter, Brittany and Colette Collins, Christa Davoll, Sarah Doverspike, Amanda Gilmore, Victoria Haney, Abby Jordan, Deanna Lanham, Ellie Lester, Regan Lochmandy, Taylor Panther, Rene Rindik, Sophie Ryland, McKinley Smoke, Elizabeth Waid, Lauren Watts, and Coach Andrew Collins.

In the state round they faced off with the KFC Tigers in a 3-0 victory.  In game two they beat the Villa Rica Chargers 1-0, and in game three beat the Hinesville Gators on Sunday morning 2-1.  Making it to the championship game Sunday afternoon was a feat for this brand new team.  Battling the older and former select LSA Jaguars, the final game ended in a 0-3 loss for the Breakers, leaving them the second ranked team in Georgia.

The Breakers play out of Jones Bridge Park on East Jones Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners.  JBS was affiliated with Georgia Soccer two years ago, and is growing strong as they welcome the following five new teams to the club:  two U12 girls teams, the U14 Lady Shockers Nation, the U16 Lady Shockers Nation, and the U16 Breakers.  The club plans to have a boys and girls league for Fall 2010 with the addition of five new girls teams.  For more information go to www.pbcsports.net or leave a message on the hotline # 678-587-8889.

Tavani Soccer Summer Camps at Duluth Parks

Posted by admin on May 11, 2010  |  No Comments

The camps have grown in popularity each year and this year we offer players six weeks of action at three different locations (Jefferson Parks & Recreation, South Forsyth’s Sharon Springs Park and Duluth’s Bunten Road Park).

The camps are for boys & girls, ages 7-15. Also, back this year is the Elite camp from 12 noon – 1:30 pm (after camp at the Duluth Bunten location), which is for the serious player who wants more soccer action (boys & girls, ages 10-15).

The camp staff is an experienced mix of top club and high school coaches along with college players. All of the college players were once coached by camp director and Georgia Coach of the Year, Gregg  Tavani, and serve as role models to the young, aspiring campers.

Tavani Soccer goals are to increase young players’ skills, further develop each camper into a better player, and most of all make it a fun experience.

A goalkeeper coach is on staff.

The camp schedule is designed to be both intense and fun at the same time.
Experienced players will be challenged and beginning players will fall in love with the “beautiful game”.
Players are divided and assigned to a coach according to age and skill.

Tavani Soccer Camps

- Duluth (Bunten Road Park) – Boys and girls, ages 7-15.  One-week sessions. June 28 – July 2, July 12 – July 16, July 19 – 23, 9 am – 12 pm.
