National Volunteer Week, April 18-24

Volunteer Coach for Dacula Youth Athletic Association football team

In honor of National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation thanks those citizens who serve the young athletes and their parents of Gwinnett County.

These volunteers log over 13,000 hours each year coaching teams, providing snacks, meeting with parents and serving active roles in Youth Athletic Associations. From the sidelines, these dedicated volunteers play a pivotal role in expanding the sporting opportunities for Gwinnett’s youth. They help kids learn good sportsmanship as well as to become better athletes.
“The thing I most enjoy about volunteering my time is the chance I have to affect someone’s life in a positive way,” said Barry McKelvey, the founder of the new Archer Athletic Association.

Not only do these volunteers help kids strengthen their athletic skills, they also serve as positive role models to encourage today’s youth to become an active part of their community.

“Life is very short and this is an opportunity to give back to the community in order to make a difference,” said Bill Hoag, the winner of 2008 Georgia Recreation and Park Association, District 7 Volunteer of the Year, Atlanta United Soccer Association volunteer and past board member.
