Western Gwinnett Bikeway Construction Set to Begin

The Western Gwinnett Bikeway is a project that has been in the works for 8 years and involves 5 federal grants and City SPLOST funds. The project will be done in two Phases with the first connecting the County portion of the bikeway at Summerchase near N. Berkeley Lake Road and running to Pleasant Hill Road along the edge of Peachtree Industrial. Once Phase II is complete the bikeway will extend to Rogers Bridge Road and tie into the Rogers Bridge Bikeway that was just completed. The bikeway will allow people to bike, roller blade, walk, and jog to stores and recreation without needing their automobile. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for 10:00am June 5th at Rogers Bridge Park for the newly acquired 11 acres of Park Land and the Rogers Bridge Bikeway that both used grant funds and SPLOST funds. A Dog Park will be the next amenity offered at Rogers Bridge Park that will also use SPLOST funds.

DULUTH DOUBLES THE SIZE OF ROGERS BRIDGE PARK WITH 11 MORE ACRES ALONG THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER ROGER “WHO”? BRIDGE “WHERE”?

Rogers Bridge Park is the newest park addition to the City of Duluth park system and is one of the best parks in Gwinnett County to enjoy a lunch, fly a kite, and relax under the pavilion while watching children play on the playground.

Life just could not get any better! UNLESS, there was more park area to expand the passive recreational opportunities… well…, the City of Duluth in support of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is proud to announce the expansion of the Rogers Bridge Park to include an additional 11 acres of river front property. The park expansion was purchased with SPLOST funds allocated for the development of the park in accordance with the park master plan. The valuable river front property not only increases the acreage of the park to 23 acres, but also increases the park amenities to include a restroom facility, large picnic pavilion, greenspace, sand volleyball court, and river access for future recreational opportunities.

A three acre dog park will be constructed in the first phase of park development to begin fall of 2010. A bike trail from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to the river is in the final stages of completion, as well as the trail design for the greenway multi use trail parallel to the river.

The City is working with Gwinnett County and Mayor Bodker from the City of Johns Creek to combine resources for the restoration of the one lane trussel bridge known as Rogers Bridge. The restoration of one of the oldest trussel bridges in the State would connect the communities to establish a trail system.

The Parks and Recreation Department would like to hear comments from the citizens on what you like about the park and suggestions for future park amenities. Please notify the department through email or contact the department at 770. 814.6981. A park celebration is being planned for June 5th. Please check the city website for updates.

Ronald Reagan Dog Park

Dogs in Lilburn, GA, want to walk, run and play… They want to go to the park… Luckily, Ronald Reagan Park at Five Forks has a pair of doggy recreational areas for our sniffy companions.

The two areas are set aside for dogs under or over 20 pounds. There is also a dog run that connects the two areas and allows drag racing dogs room to get up to speed. Both areas also feature some obstacles for the dogs to play on, and even a Doggy Water Bar.

Dogs in Lilburn have it made… being able to shirk the leash and spend some quality time running with the other four legged floor vacuums.

But, Ronald Reagan Park isn’t just one dimensional. There is a great play area for kids, a large field that is excellent to kick a ball around it, horse shoe pits, a small skateboard park, basketball, walking trails and several pavilions. Ronald Reagan Park at Five Forks in Lilburn

The park is part of the award-winning Gwinnett County Parks system. With facilities ranging from indoor and outdoor aquatics centers, ball fields and biking trails to green space and waterways, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation is making sure that residents have plenty of options to get away without going away… even dogs.

And that isn’t even the only option for dogs in Lilburn to hit the park and play with their peers. Lilburn City Park has a great walking trail that runs along Camp Creek, Mountain Park Aquatic Center has walking trails, as does Mountain Park Park.
