PARK SAFETY TIPS FROM GWINNETT COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION

parkpolice

With more people getting out to enjoy Gwinnett County parks and park facilities, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation (GCPR) would like to remind citizens of some important safety tips and a few key precautions that will make your park experience a safe one.

  • Always remember to observe posted park opening and closing times.
  • Look, listen, and be alert at all times.
  • When parking at any of the parks or park facilities, it is important to secure your vehicle.

According to Corporal Jake Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department, to make your vehicle a more difficult target for thieves follow these easy tips:

  • Always lock your doors and completely close all windows.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Do not park in isolated areas.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain view and do not move valuables to the trunk after arrival; thieves may already be watching.

Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation (GCPR) is dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for park patrons. Park patrons are encouraged to pay attention to park rules, signs, alerts, hours and to check the website www.gwinnettparks.com for up-to-date park information. Park patrons are asked to call the Gwinnett County Police Department non-emergency number at 770-513-5100 to report suspicious activity; for emergencies dial 911.

The “radishest” veggies in metro Atlanta can be found at the Suwanee Farmers Market, according to Nickelodeon’s 2009 Parents’ Picks Awards. And, when their little ones want to swing and slide parents’ favorite spot is PlayTown Suwanee.

From May 5 – July 15, parents all over the country were invited to vote online for their favorite local family-friendly places. Suwanee locales were ranked tops in the two categories, best farmers market and best playground or park, in which they were included.

Atlanta runners up in the farmers market category include Decatur, Peachtree Road, and Glenwood Park. The playground category included Brook Run, Best Friend, Swift-Cantrell, Centennial, East Cobb, and Piedmont parks.

Parks then and Now

Rural Playground - photo from NRPA.org

Looking back at the history of American parks and recreation, it doesn’t take long to figure out that much has changed. This photo shows a typical playground from the 1950s. Note the use of unconventional equipment like spare tires and the lack of safe surfacing. My old Brooklyn playground had monkey bars, metal swings and mazelike jungle gym. Photos here are from the National Parks and Recreation Association and NYC Government Parks website.

If you have park picutres from the past of Gwinnett Parks please feel free to send them on to me. I’d like to post some of the old park photos. Send it to rico@gwinnettparklife.com.
