VINES PARK RENOVATION GETS UNDERWAY

VinesGarden

Gwinnett commissioners recently approved a major renovation project for Vines Park near Grayson in southern Gwinnett. The project will replace the existing pavilion with a new one located closer to the lake, replace the existing trail around the lake and add a new lake overlook.

In addition, crews will remove the old wooden structures and bridges that existed on the original residential property when the land was donated to the County in 1990. These structures have presented maintenance issues over the years.

Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said, “We are using new materials that are expected to reduce future maintenance costs for the trails and structures while keeping the lakeside experience visitors expect to find at Vines Park. We also will improve access from the parking lot to the trail.”

The County signed a 20-year lease agreement in 1997 allowing Georgia Fine Restaurants, Inc., to operate Vines Mansion on the park property but Hoskins said the rehab project does not include the leased property.

The Board awarded the $1.07 million project to low bidder Rescom of Georgia, LLC, using funds from the 2005 SPLOST sales tax program. Vines Park opened to the public in 2005.

Rhodes Jordan Park Construction Update!

Rhodes Jordan Park is set to undergo extensive renovation starting the first week in June and continuing thru summer of 2011. As a result of the construction activity at the park, certain areas and amenities will be closed to the public until the completion of the project. The playgrounds around the lake, the trail and the pavilions will be closed to the public. As a safety measure, patrons are advised to pay special attention to signage and stay away from areas under construction.

The park will remain open to the public with the exception of the above. The community center, pool and sports fields will be operational during this renovation project. The Lawrenceville Senior Center located at the park is unaffected, open and operational during this time.  For more information on the Lawrenceville Senior Center, call 770-822-5180.

Rhodes Jordan Park will be getting a one-mile paved multi-purpose trail and boardwalk around the perimeter of the existing lake, a new restroom building and new parking. In addition, the old picnic pavilions will be replaced and new soccer fields, outdoor basketball courts and horseshoe courts.

BOGAN PARK GETS NEW PLAYGROUNDS

Three old playgrounds at Bogan Park will be replaced with new equipment and new safety surfaces over the coming months. Upgrades will include an improved retaining wall, better drainage, shade canopies and benches.

Commissioners awarded a contract for almost $270,000 to PlayCore Wisconsin, Inc., dba GameTime/Dominica Recreation of Longwood, FL. The money to pay for it will come from SPLOST. “This is a much-needed improvement and the funds were already designated for it through the 2005 SPLOST program,” said District 4 Commissioner Kevin Kenerly.

All three playgrounds will be ADA-accessible with engineered wood fiber surfacing and concrete ramps that attach to the surfaces similar to a boat ramp in a lake. The new equipment will feature several activity panels, drums and a hand cycler. Bridges, climbers and slides will also accessible from transfer platforms for children who are able to pull themselves out of a wheelchair and onto the playground deck.

Work will be phased so that one playground will always remain open, with all three playground renovations complete by spring 2010.

The 83-acre Bogan Park, at 2733 North Bogan Road near Buford, features an indoor aquatic center, double gym, ball fields and two miles of trails. Gwinnett County parks were named best in the nation last year by the National Recreation and Park Association.
