Looking back at the history of American parks and recreation, it doesn’t take long to figure out that much has changed. This photo shows a typical playground from the 1950s. Note the use of unconventional equipment like spare tires and the lack of safe surfacing. My old Brooklyn playground had monkey bars, metal swings and mazelike jungle gym.
